The beauty of Japanese design
What is furoshiki?
Furoshiki (風呂敷) is the art of traditional Japanese wrapping cloth, typically used to transport a variety of goods historically. It has typically been used to transport items including clothes and gifts.
Modern furoshiki no longer is made from only one material, it can be made from a breadth of different cloths. These can include silk, cotton, rayon, nylon as well as chirimen. In addition, modern furoshiki are typically decorated with traditional designs, or by the popular shibori (しぼり / 絞り) designs - which is the Japanese manual resist dyeing technique.
It should be noted, that there is no one single set size for furoshiki - they can truly be any size! Sizes range from hand-sized, to larger than bed-sheet sized furoshiki! The most common sizes are normally 45 cm (17.7 inches) and 68–72 cm (26.7-28.3 inches).
Though there are still users in Japan, since the post-war period these numbers have declined due to the popular use of the plastic bag. It is still use to wrap and transport lunch boxes.
What is Get Knotted?
With the renewed interest in environmental protection as well as sustainable design, we understood the need for an alternative to the plastic bag. We seek to support our planet and our environment to promote the use of alternative ways of transporting goods or shopping.
So how are we going to do it? Combining the historical (and successful) design of furoshiki, we seek to bring it more to the needs of various communities in the modern era in a variety of different contexts.
Blending the simplicity of Japanese furoshiki, with the needs of communities around the world (in terms of the type of cloth used) and prints from across the globe - we seek to support our planet the best way we can - with an innovative sustainable design!
